It took me a solid 20 minutes to narrow it down to five.
  • cutchinscutchins August 2009

    BRAVEHEART
  • cutchinscutchins August 2009
just rewatched braveheart the other day. it's still great, but i loved it so much more when i first watched it in elementary school.

    edit:

this thread is the best idea ever. gachi, i'm dling generation kill, looks awesome. and you are very correct about glory.

    2. Saving Private Ryan
    3. Black Hawk Down
    4. Band Of Brothers
    5. Red Dawn
  • Three words:

    The Hurt Locker

If you haven't seen it check it out, one of the most intense war films I've seen and it wasn't even that ripe with violence it was just fantastically done.
  • BrianBrian August 2009
    1. Band of Brothers
    2. Black Hawk Down
    3. Tears of the Sun
    4. Rambo (new one)
    5. Saving Private Ryan

Definitely a tough top 5, and I may alter 3-5 when I get home and peruse my movie collection.

    The Hurt Locker

Is it in all theaters yet? I have a hard time finding the "select" theaters that they talk about. I've been wanting to watch this since it got high praises from Ebert.

I'd also like to support Gachi's selection of Glory. It is honestly one of my favorite movies. I'm surprised by the lack of Patton...
  • NonRootNonRoot August 2009
    1. Band of Brothers
    2. Saving Private Ryan
    3. Glory
    4. Black Hawk Down
    5. Defiance
  • NunesNunes August 2009
    In no particular order:

    The Great Escape
The Bridge over the River Kwai
    Inglorious Basterds
    Das Boot
    Full Metal Jacket

Inglorious Basterds is still in honey moon phases, and has only been seen once. I could be coerced to swap it out for The Big Parade.

    /Pre-WWII WWI film FTW!
  • GachiGachi August 2009
Yes CJ, Glory is the shit! Saw it in high school history. Generation Kill is good, and no, not because I'm a Marine because I watched it before joining. image/biggrin.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin.gif" />

    mannnnnn, too many to count image/sad.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad.gif" />

I guess I'll just list what I need to see based on this thread:
    Generation Kill
Inglorious Basterds - seeing it tonight I think?
    The Hurt Locker

  • BlackLightBlackLight August 2009
the hurt locker was incredibly awesome

    in no particular order

    1. To End All Wars
    2. Platoon
    3. Black Hawk Down
    4. Saving Private Ryan
    5. Kingdom of Heaven (Director's Cut)

  • NunesNunes August 2009
If we call The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly a war movie, that's top 5 material.

Also, if we expand which wars we're talking about it's a whole new ballgame.
  • BlackLightBlackLight August 2009
a war movie is a movie set in / about a war. i think many people here are confining themselves to 20th century wars.
  • NunesNunes August 2009
    Mulan?

I don't think people are necessarily confining themselves to 20th century wars, but there are far more good 20th century war movies than there are about pre-modern eras. I don't know exactly why that is, but I would venture to guess it is due largely to the fact that we know so much more about 20th century wars than any others. That and we can relate much more easily to a soldier in modern warfare.

    return of the jedi? King.

    Fixed.

Dungeon Siege: In the Name of the King
    13th Warrior
    Versus
    Cyber Ninja

A stricter definition of "War" is required.

/yes, I WILL turn every thread into a pedantic whirlpool of nonsense, thank you very much.

  • KPKP August 2009
    The answer is obvious....Starship Troopers!!!

I mean war movie could be any movie involving war/organized violence, which is like half the movies in existence.

Star wars, as the very name shows is about war, but I wouldn't really call it a war movie....

Probably more like 5 - 15%, but yeah. It makes for a much better thread IMO.

Pan's Labyrinth! Takes place DURING a war.
  • ErlingErling August 2009
    Braveheart.
  • GachiGachi August 2009
You guys are just reaching for movies now. There's a difference between a War movie and an Action movie. If you're trying to choose a movie that has a fight scene as a War movie, you're wrong imho.

I've been following the strict criteria of: movies whose actions center around or take place during a war.

if it was really just fight scenes, this would have already gotten way out of hand.
  • BrianBrian August 2009
Rambo brings the war. It counts.
  • cutchinscutchins August 2009
someone ban nunes from this thread plz, kthx.
  • NunesNunes August 2009
    I see how it is.

All the Military folks in the thread want all their war movies to be about America kicking ass, emirite? image/tongue.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":P" border="0" alt="tongue.gif" />

/you got 5 actual war movies out of me
//Technically Gone with the Wind is a war movie, and a fantastic film.
//So is Forrest Gump, according to IMDB.
  • EvestayEvestay August 2009
I really like all of your lists but I just wanted to add Gladiator and the HBO series Rome (revolved around a war to put people in and out of power but barely showed the war).
  • BlackLightBlackLight August 2009
    Rome is awesome
  • cutchinscutchins September 2009
Just finished Generation Kill. Gachi, did this series not give you second thoughts about being a Marine? It paints so much of the leadership as incompetent and/or retarded.

    Awesome series, though.
