Futurama, into the green yonder. The new episodes come out in a couple weeks!

  • Which version of Dune (David Lynch or Sci-Fi Channel?) and Kingdom of Heaven (the Director's Cut is superior) do you have? Is that the full cut of Metropolis (and if so where I can I find it... legally of course. PM me).

    As for some suggestions (alphabetized):

12 Monkeys - mystery with a sci-fi twist by Terry Gilliam starring Bruce Willis. Involves time travel and a very good performance by Brad Pitt in the nut house.

American Beauty - Kevin Spacey hates his life in the sub-urbs and mixes things up. He does everything that any pencil pusher with a cushy office job has ever wanted to do. It deserved the awards it won.

From Dusk till Dawn - Just watch it. Don't look up anything about it. The experience will be great. It is a Robert Rodriguez movie (and therefore Tarantino is involved one way or another, he plays a lead role). Tarantino broke George Clooney out of prison and now they are escaping to Mexico. They take hostages and hide in a titty bar.

Labyrinth - Seriously? You should already have this movie. MUPPETS and DAVID BOWIE!

Let the Right One In - Not in English, but the best Vampire movie in years. It is based on a book that is on my to read list.

Role Models - The cast doesn't look like it would be a good movie, but it is a very fun movie. It contains a giant LARP battle and the best name for a fake kingdom ever.

Speed Racer - The movie is visually impressive. There is a lot of color in the movie and the racing is fun. It isn't a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination. If you watched the cartoons when you were young like I did, you'll see a lot of the goofy throwbacks and references that are very nostalgic.

Star Trek: Wrath of Khan - Amazing movie. Definitely the best Star Trek movie.

Sunshine - Sci-fi turned slasher. It is hit or miss, I think you'd like it.

Thank You for Smoking - I don't know why this movie isn't more popular. The cast is mainly underrated actors (Aaron Eckhart, William H. Macy, Rob Lowe) and then Katie Holmes, Adam Brody, and Robert Duvall. The humor is dry and well delivered. Great flick.

The Producers - Your Mel Brooks collection is lacking Spring Time for Hitler.

  • Jedd beat me to Sunshine.

    Check out The Lookout.

Slow burnerer of a crime film, but pretty decent cast, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a class actor and the film comes together very well.

Check out Moon as well, Sam Rockwell is the shiz!

If you feel like venturing into the slightly insane I highly recommend both:
    The Jacket
    Shutter Island
    The Fourth Kind

that's the dune movie. the miniseries is in with tv (so i have it all--you're talking to a kid who's written two theses on dune/frank herbert (50pg in high school, 80pg in college) and has at least half of dozen copies of the original 6 and every book herbert's published and related shit like the dune encyclopedia).

it should be the director's cut of kingdom of heaven, but i'll check to make sure

i believe that's the full cut of metropolis. i use torrentz.com for everything but music (<3 tom for turning me onto it long ago)

12 monkeys--good call, haven't seen that in awhile

american beauty--dont like it. that reminds me i need to pick up some kevin spacey movies, though

From Dusk till Dawn--seen it but only on tv. i'll definitely grab this

labyrinth--lol ill check it out. actually, now that i think about it, someone recommended crystal castles or whatever that jim henson movie is. have you seen that?

Let the Right One In--never heard of it. i'll definitely grab it, thanks

role models--didnt like it, which saddened me because i like all of those actors

speed racer--i heard it was boring but good on acid. i don't have any laying around, but i'lll grab it anyway

star trek wok--i used to have every star trek movie. dunno what happened. ill grab it

sunshine--never heard of it. it sounds pretty sweet though. ill grab it

thank you for smoking--seen if a few times, but i definitely should have it to watch again, thanks.

mel brooks--damn, i don't know why i don't have more of his stuff. i'll grab them all

jacket i have but it's entitled jacket.avi instead of the jacket for some stupid reason. off topic, i don't know why, but i dislike adrian brody (but still liked that movie)

shutter island--meh, although i watched a cam, so that could be part of it. i'll give it another try

the fourth kind--i'll grab it, thanks!

last night i picked up harry brown, which is really good
  • redboneredbone June 2010
Part of my liking of those movies may or may not be related to having smoked immediately beforehand. Consider that my disclaimer for the fourth kind. It creeped the hell out of me, and everyone else that watched it at the time, but might have little effect other than being annoying to a sober person

    - Hardboiled (CLASSIC, one of the best action movies ever, in chinese though)
    - Bullit
    - Fantastic Mr. Fox
    - Cabin Fever

i have chasing amy on dvd and have fantastic mr. fox, but the other's i do not--and many i haven't seen--so thanks!

i think i'm going to watch moon tonight, since it received so many recommendations
  • The other Jim Henson one is Dark Crystal. It is also good.

There is footage of Metropolis that was missing for years found pretty recently. It is amazing that a movie so old is still turning heads.

I don't remember if you had The Wrestler on the list, but if you don't, grab that. That movie is one I put off watching, but it is amazing. Mikey Rourke has the acting chops of a demigod.
  • Amelie, if you like foreign films.

The Royal Tenenbaums is really neat because it stars "big" names playing characters they usually wouldn't, also it's Wes Anderson.

amelie--is that a french film where her daydreams come to life or something? i think i started it but never finished for some reason. i will get it again.

do you like any other foreign films? i fear my history lacks in this department and would consider any suggestion.

royal tenenbaums--i will grab that and the rest of wes anderson-written movies. thanks!

    Any Pixar movie.
    Kickass
    Curious Case of Benjamin Button

I think that's about all I've seen recently. Oh well.
  • MagicMagic June 2010
    The Notebook
Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood
    Crossroads
    Steel Magnolias
  • vegitotgkvegitotgk June 2010
I definitely recommend the animated film Paprika. I've seen Howl's Moving Castle, Akira, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, FF: Advent Children, and Ninja Scroll and yet I believe Paprika is better than all of them. By far the best movie I've seen recently. You should check it out

    Yeah, something like that.

I'm not knowledgeable on foreign films at all, but one of the ones I saw recently that I liked was After the Wedding, a really cool dutch film.
  • NunesNunes June 2010
The only dutch film I've seen was a zombie film. And about a third of the way through I realized that spoken Dutch and spoken English share like 30% of each others phrases.

    "Whoje dare?"
    "Ze Liuving Deud."
  • JonobonoJonobono June 2010
Little Miss Sunshine. One of my favorites. Miller's Crossing is also quite good.
  • AlfyAlfy June 2010
Every single episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000.
