Movie... of the moment?
  • JonobonoJonobono September 2008
So i'm taking a film making class, and have found myself watching a shit ton of movies all of a sudden.

The principle will be the same as the song of the moment thread, post a movie, maybe a short explaination of why you liked it, and proceed.

    Last night i watched:

Layer Cake. Rather entertaining and the end is quite amusing. If you're a fan of mob movies, this would fit along those lines.
  • GovernorGovernor September 2008
Forewarning: I will be spamming the hell out of this thread come October.
  • GmnotutooGmnotutoo September 2008
Fisher King, one of my favorites.

    Also, The Big Lebowski.
  • JonobonoJonobono September 2008
Please do gov, i have 4 months to learn as much as i can about film making.
  • Black+BalloonBlack Balloon September 2008
    Shawshank Redemption.
  • Funky+Pa%26%23036%3Bta+T0mmYFunky Pa$ta T0mmY September 2008
Did a Naked gun trilogy marathon last night.

    Fucking hilarious.

For the sake of not hearing Dan complain, I'm leaving anime movies off the list.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail

    Action:
    Pulp Fiction

I like Shaun's list. I'm going to add American Gangster. That movie was pretty awesome.

  • JeddHamptonJeddHampton September 2008
Good movie, Dan. I was actually intending to put that on there, but while adding movies, it slipped my mind.
  • jimmah7jimmah7 September 2008
i hated layer cake's release ending. a lot. i choose to imagine the alternate ending as the real ending.
  • coffeecoffee September 2008
John Carpenter's The Thing: classic scifi-horror that focuses on paranoia and atmosphere
High Fidelity - should be in your top 5 list of movies
  • BlackLightBlackLight September 2008
    The Thing is so awesome.

Right now probably Tropic Thunder was probably the best comedy I've seen in a while. For movies on video, I'd have to go with Into the Wild most recently seen.
  • coffeecoffee September 2008
just watched Ghost World last night. Great movie i'm sure everyone can relate to in some way

also, since you're taking a film class you'll probably end up analyzing a david lynch film, in which case you should take a fistfull of acid and start writing. I couldn't tell you one fucking thing that happened during Lost Highway; to me it was just a series of moving pictures with creepy Robert Blake popping up at times. If cohesive sotrylines were a white woman David Lynch would be Kobe Bryant
  • NunesNunes September 2008
    Natural Born Killers - Tarentino

    Mullholland Drive - David Lynch

That should be enough for you to write a few 10 page papers in a film class.

That movie would be perfect for a class... although, I think the subject matter would be questionable in a school setting.

Either way, the movie is awesome. The ending is classic.

Saw the Magnificent Seven. It is awesome. I've only seen two Steve McQueen movies, but I think I'm going to be seeing (27, hopefully) more.

Also, it made me want to see Seven Samurai.
  • NunesNunes September 2008
@ the first half of your post:
you should watch the seven samurai

    @ the second half:
    oh.

Anyone know of any places that have these movies to rent? I went to Blockbuster with some of these in mind but they only had Layer Cake and Equilibrium.

They didnt have The Thing, Natural Born Killers, or Shawshank Redemption. Those are the ones that I wanted really to check out :/

    Netflix. Get with the times.
  • NunesNunes September 2008
Check the warbls. The warbls have everything.
    /I haven't rented a movie in over a year.
  • coffeecoffee September 2008
The Thing is a movie to own, fuck renting it. Shawshank redemption is usually on TV three times a week

edit: Kung Fu Hustle is also worth getting. It's a superhero movie in the sense the Matrix was, except the fight scenes are dream-like, Crouching tiger hidden dragon-style. Speaking of the Matrix, Keanu Reeves is apparently dating China Chow, who was in The Big Hit starring Mark "Marky Mark" Walberg. My advice is to avoid seeing The Big Hit, as it is SIDS in movie form
  • JeddHamptonJeddHampton September 2008
    Here's another great movie:

    Dead Poet Society.
  • MedicMedic September 2008
Memento was pretty good, plot gets intertwine and confusing at times, but it's rather good.

I disagree. Shawshank Redemption is a very good movie, but I think the Boondock Saints is better.

OMG, did you see the newest South Park? Rather funny on this regard, but not their best work.

Anywho, my film professor sorta has me on a Coen Brother Craze, so I watched Miller's Crossing and found it to be wonderful. Prepare to get more Coen Brother reviews as i mow through their stuff.

Raising Arizona was fucking hilarious. I think my favorite movie of all time would go to the Super Mario Brothers Movie. No matter how bad it was, it's still special in my heart (and my VCR).

    Jaws
    Tremors
    Titan AE
    Star Wars

    anyone?

Maybe not the best of movies (except Jaws) but still up there in the list.
