Best free anti virus?

What's the best free anti virus software?
I've been using this symantec corporate edition that we had to install freshmen year when we moved into the dorms. it has served me fine since then, but there have been new versions released since then that i can't update to because i no longer live in the dorms. Just to be on the safe side i think i'm ready to switch to a different more current program.
i've heard lots of great things about AVG, which is currently my first choice. i've installed it on other people's machines and it seems good, i just wanted to hear other informed opinions.
if anybody could just give me advice, pros and cons of certain programs, warnings and all that jazz, i'd really appreciate it.
i'm particularly looking for a program that doesn't eat up memory running in the background and whatnot. -
I used avast for several years, it's a very nice program. You can run a full scan and it only takes up like 20 megs of ram or some ridiculously small amount. I recently dropped it because there's problems with it running on vista. I'm currently using the semantic corporate version that dorm residents need to install.

I use avast. but avg is good as well. either one would be fine.

I have been using AVG for a couple of years now and I absolutely love it. It is very easy to configure and use and will update and scan your computer daily at whatever time you wish. I hate all these high-end anti-virus programs that slow down your comp. I really recommend AVG for performance because it tends to not use as much memory as Norton, symantec and others. I have never gotten a virus with AVG and it does a great job of removing viruses from already infected computers.

My computer is over-protected
/ohmy.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":o" border="0" alt="ohmy.gif" />, Zone Alarm ( Taken from School ), McAfee ( Installed before I get My PC ), CCleaner and Ad-Aware. Never had any kind of problems with all of these.

I know it's late but the heuristics in AVG are god awful.

ummm, first of all, those won't update. second of all, kaspersky is a memory hog. nod32 is really good, but, again you can't update. AVG works on xp/vista 32bit. don't know about 64. And it is fairly light. It's not the lightest of all programs, but sure hell beats something like itunes or aim. you only need those better ones if you constantly download dangerous files like unchecked torrents, visit infinitely looped free porn sites, serial/crack sites, etc. you only need AVG otherwise. only thing that worries me that so many ppl on using it right now, if some other antivirus company targets it on purpose with a worm... o well, that is only if the source code is leaked.

My only problem with AVG is how much memory it hogs when I set it to auto-scan or auto-load upon booting. But the scans it does are very thorough, and I can't fault it's library of definitions (which is quite extensive).

"You can't do <blank> better" is not a valid argument when someone says something isn't good. You'll have to give me a reason why it doesn't suck (heuristics is a big reason why it does). -
